Inspired by the goldmundizator (Pioneer DV-300) from Lampizator (see link for details), I wanted to try my hand at something similar.
I tried the usual places: Craigslist. No luck. ebay.
No luck. So I found other models that had the same DVD drive at Pioneer.
I found a DV-400V on ebay. Bonus it has USB input. I
checked the main chip number, it was the same as the one in the DV-300 (I thought at the time).
Ok. Got the player. Got the service manual. Got the RCA
sockets. Got the cable.
Still
unaware that the chip is different (MT1389FE/E-L vs
MT1389FE/S-L, the DV-300 service manual had inconveniently cropped the first page at MT1389FE and yes, I was not careful enough) until I start counting pins and looking at the
schematic closely (64 pins per side vs 54, maybe it is the HDMI, USB).
Thankfully, there was a pin with SPDIF in the schematic (215) and I was able
to wire the new RCA socket to it. And there was music. Good music. Both
from CD and USB. Yes
!
I used to believe in function with no attention to form (Sockets and interconnects are for sissies). With a little extra care, I have to admit this does look better.
The willing and able
We want pin 215. Shared between the blob on the corner of the AV box and one end of B4007 (Yes, it was my first SMD. Removal is easy)

I am planning this same modification. How did the unit sound as a transport, using the factory RCA SPDIF port, compared to taking the SPDIF signal right off of the chip as you and Lampizator did?
ReplyDeleteI did not try unmodified. And I did not retain original. So I do not know the answer to your question.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your adventures.
Is it just a case of making a solder joint to these two points or do you have to remove anything or break any part of the circuit?
ReplyDeleteI had to remove one SMD component to reroute the spdif signal.
ReplyDeleteWhich SMD component was it? Thank you for your reply. It sounds pretty decent in standard form.
ReplyDeleteI removed B4007 and used the solder blob at the corner of the box marked AV to directly connect the RCA for SPDIF. The schematic helps. I got it at https://elektrotanya.com/
ReplyDeleteIt was an intro to DIY and Modding for me. I was hoping to retain functionality and it worked. I did not do a direct comparison with and without this change.
Good luck with the changes.
B4007 is the grey part adjacent to the shorter side of the box around the AV marking. It may work without removing this, but I did not test that.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comprehensive explanation. Very grateful.
ReplyDeleteJust to update. I messed up. I accidentally caught the ribbon cable with the soldering iron and burnt a piece of it. When I powered up the player, I was greeted with the dreaded silicon type, burning smell. However, the story does have a happy ending.
ReplyDeleteI came across this thread -

Post 12 gives a Pioneer DV 393 as an equivalent same specification machine as the DV 300. The 393 is readily available in the UK on eBay. I bought a couple, one for £19, the other cost £25. Anyway, I successfully carried out the mod and can compare against the other unit. Definitely worth giving it a go, the music seems to get an excitement boost. The standard machine is great in itself, beat my Rega Jupiter CD player, which I was previously using as a transport.
CD's have never sounded so good. Anyone who plays CD's and who enjoys high sound quality but on limited funds should seriously consider giving this a go.
I use a Topping E30 DAC, Audio Innovations amplifier and Heco Direkt Einklang loudspeakers.
Thank you once again to bajjisw for helping to sow the seeds.
That is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDid this modification on Samsung c370,player uses the same SOC.Moded player - Khadas tone board-Fiio K5-Sennheiser HD599.
ReplyDeleteI just removed the SMD capacitor, rerouted the signal to the coaxial output of the player. No need to add an additional RCA connector.
Result is clean sound.
I should thank you.I simply don't think you can get such clean pcm signal at such price, dare I say even higher.Thinking of buying an Edifier speaker-R2750DB.This speaker has coaxial input.I think it should sound great.
ReplyDeleteExcellent.
DeleteMy connection failed, the wire became unattached.
ReplyDeleteI had the repair carried out by a technician and his findings were very interesting.
Firstly, he doesn't see any problem with the player's standard factory coaxial connection. This would be his recommended option.
Secondly, the Lampizator direct connection mod showed dc voltage on his oscilloscope tests and a much, much higher output voltage than the usual spdif standard.
He then used a resistor and capacitor combination for my new DVD 300 direct connection mod, resulting in the same voltage output as the standard machine.
He showed me the three scope readings and the third option looked more like the square waveform in the Lampizator photo. The first option looks fine to my admittedly untrained eye, option two's reading looked a mess.
Anyway, food for thought?
Thanks for sharing this
